Kol Tzedek Secures Grant for The Philadelphia Sher Project

posted Dec 1, 2009 7:59 PM by Rabbi Lauren Grabelle Herrmann
Kol Tzedek is excited to announce that we have won a grant to research, teach and perform the Philadelphia sher!  The Philly sher is a klezmer dance medley that was hugely popular in Philadelphia from about 1915 through 1965.  The Kol Tzedek Simcha Band has been learning the sher and will be teaching the dance--a social dance for four couples--to the community at our annual Chanukah party, the kickoff to the larger research project.  Over the next several months, Simcha Band member Meredith Aska McBride and any other interested community members will be conducting archival and oral history research on the sher.  At the end, we will have a party to share our findings with the broader Philadelphia Jewish community as well as creating a permanent web archive of documentary film, audio recordings and written information on the sher and on klezmer in Philadelphia, with the ultimate goal of returning the sher to active performance.

Kol Tzedek thanks The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia for their support of the Philadelphia Sher Project.
