Teaching our children about living a meaningful, Jewish life involves exposing them to the beautiful rituals of our tradition. Starting in October 2009, Kol Tzedek families of all ages and stripes can experience these things not only in a classroom but through the celebration of Shabbat in community. The Torah school families expressed their desire to create a Shabbat school for the torah school children that would coincide with our monthly Shabbat morning service. Recognizing the needs of others in the community as well and the desire to create a rich, inter-generational experience, the program will surely offer something for everyone! Shabbat School (for children 5-13) will involve the children engaging with prayer, torah study, and participating in the larger "adult" Shabbat service. At 10:00am the torah school children will engage with an initial project related to a Jewish theme or value, then will join the main sanctuary service for part of the community prayer service. Following they will have their own tefillah (prayer) and text exploration. To enable as many families as possible in Kol Tzedek to participate in the program, we will additionally have babysitting available for children 18 months to 5 years (pre-Torah school age) and then a "Dor LaDor StoryTelling Program" from 11:30am-12:00pm in which members of the extended KT community will read Jewishly themed stories to the youngest Kol Tzedekers.
The entire community will join together for final prayers, kiddush, motzei and our usual pot-luck Kiddush lunch. Thanks to Rob Auritt, Sherri Cohen, debra kimmelman, Karen Guss, Rie Brosco, and Edward Epstein for their work developing the program. |
