The KT Library

Picture
The Kol Tzedek office at 707 S 50th St also houses a small library of just over 700 books, ranging from Torah commentary to modern spirituality to children's books. You can view the collection using our online catalog.

The library is located in the front room of 707. The shelves along the back wall are Primary Sources (such as the Tanakh and Talmud), commentaries on those sources, and Reference materials. The shelves near the front windows are Secondary Sources: modern books, all in English. This includes a section of books belonging to the Jewish Farm School related to agriculture and the Earth. Each book has a spine label indicating what shelf it goes on, but there is no order within the shelves.

The Primary Sources and Reference sections (back wall) are for IN-HOUSE use only. Books in the Secondary Sources section (near the windows) may be checked out by KT members. Here's how!

  • When you borrow a book, please write the book and your name on the pad of paper we will leave by the shelves. If the pad has disappeared, you can use any paper. Someone will enter your name into the online catalog system. You will get a reminder when it is due, but there are no fines.
  • When you return a book, please leave it on the small black table that is designated for reshelving.
  • If you are browsing books without taking them out of the building, feel free to reshelve them yourself, or not.
  • If you'd like to search the online catalog, you can do a keyword search, tag search, or virtually browse the shelf:
    • Keyword search will return books from all shelves. The gray bar above each book title tells you what shelf it is on.
    • Click "Tag List" at the top right. Pick a tag to see all books with that tag. For instance, the tag "Shabbat" could apply to books on the Children shelf, books on the Siddurim shelf, or books on the Holidays & Lifecycle shelf. Again, the gray bar above each book title tells you what shelf it is on.
    • The shelves are listed on the left. Click on "Jewish Thought," for instance, to see all the books on that physical shelf.

For the time being, we are not accepting book donations, but we'll announce donation criteria shortly.
